I have been dining at Ciro and Ciro for a number of years as I stay in the hotel in the Piazza but was extremely disappointed during my last visit to Rome. The restaurant is under new management and the staff who I had got to know were no longer employed there. They were a major factor in the success of the restaurant. It now lacks the friendly atmosphere of the past and the standard of cuisine was also lacking. I was served some grilled calamari which were way past their sell by date. You could smell them from afar. They offered me an alternative which was unavailable and made no effort to offer me anything else. Luckily I had ordered some chips which ended up being my dinner for the evening. There was no apology and they even charged me for the chips! I should like to add that I am bilingual and speak fluent Italian. Needless to say I did not go back and although they saw me every day did not bother to try to win me back. Little wonder that they had so few customers. I was really happy to see one of the former staff at another branch, she greeted me with open arms. I will try there next time.
