Oddly the reviews of restaurants in the Venice-Santa Monica region are similarly positive. But nonetheless we chose Casablanca out of the group. The restaurant sits on a non-descript boulevard corner surrounded by very narrow parking slots. Entering the place you take in the shadowy decor with rough stucco plastered walls that have seen better days. The staff is cheery and positive but for a Mexican food spot, there is something offsetting by the Bogey movie photos and thematic touches. I presume that this reflects an earlier owner's homage to the '40s. The menu is pretty standard Mexican fare and the clientele included large hispanic families which can often hint at great food. Not the case here. The food was merely okay. The chile rellano was lightly battered and not greasy or oily as can be the case elsewhere so that was a plus. The tortillas are produced from dough rolled and direct onto the griddle before hitting your table - as in the other reviews - great stuff. But the sauces lacked substance and were bland. The cheese enchilada was a corn tortilla with some cheese covered in that bland sauce. One dish had to go back to the kitchen for all beans when it came to us as all rice so the service while friendly was not really paying attention. I would not bother with this fare and am surprised (and more than a little suspicious) by the ecstatic reviews.
