I was staying at Hotel Inter near Beyazit tramstop and explored for cheap non-touristy restaurants, heading away from Grand Bazar. This restaurant is fantastic and I wish I'd found it nearer the start of my trip. Prices for a main are 10-12 TL and for this price you normally get poor quality processed "meat" but here it's top quality: a selection of about 6 meals are prepared daily (plus a selection of meat for kebabs etc. is on skewers ready to be cooked), so you'll see different menus each day. The menu is written in Turkish only which is good, as those targeting tourists are higher priced, typically 15-25 TL for a main. This is no problem here as many of the staff speak English. Turkish restaurants are big on bread which is free but many places give you plain mass-produced bread but the bread here is superb and appears home made. The only problem is it doesn't have alcohol but there are plenty of bars nearby. It gets very busy delivering meals for locals from noon which shows it's reputation and has a lot of staff for such a small place. To find it have your back to Hotel Inter, go left, go right at next junction by a small mosque, then left at next junction, it's on the far corner of this short street. If I return to Istanbul I would eat here as much as possible; especially avoid the touristy back-to-back seafood restaurants under Galata Bridge; their prices START at 25 TL and go up to 380 TL! We went there as it was recommended but regretted it: they are very pushy to get you in, are not happy if you don't order an expensive option, and the fish was not that nice.
