Truffles is one of the restaurants in the VanDusen Botanical Garden. On this occasion it was chilly and rainy, so we opted not to pay for admission to the garden itself--from what we could see, it's quite nice--but the eatery and the visitor's center in which it's located was really terrific. I'm giving them only a four out of five rating because there was one flaw that was rather inexcusable. The attractive architecture of this center features all sealed concrete floors, and Truffles has chairs with steel legs, many of which have missing or worn-out rubber feet. Move that chair leg across this floor and it emits a screeching sound like fingernails on a blackboard amplified theough a Marshall stack. Many hardware stores can sell replacement feet for this sort of chair, and I'd bet there are types of feet that will not set patrons' teeth on edge again and again during an otherwise pleasant stay. I advise management to get with the program. I wanted just a light lunch and my wife was interested in only coffee. They have quite a range of sandwiches, quiches, wraps, I opted for one of their soups of the day, roasted tomato. It was terrific, thick and flavorful, but maybe just a touch too heavy on the hot cayenne pepper. They have a full espresso bar, so I started with an Americano and followed with a regular coffee with a shot of French Vanilla syrup; it was too much coffee for my morning but I had no regrets. Counter service here is great--order at the register, and they give you a number on a table stand. The food comes to you promptly. Afterwards, they bus the table for you. The prices were affordable, especially by Vancouver standards. If they'd only fix those chair legs they'd deserve a top rating.
