We found this little cafe close to where we were staying in Charlottenberg and if you are visiting Berlin for the famous Christmas Markets this month it is situated just a short walk across the road from the beautiful Schloss Charlottenberg (a must see stop when ever visiting Berlin - beautiful gardens with a lake). The cafe is owned and run by Rauf, a very straight forward guy who, as he put it, loves to cook because it makes him happy! We visited twice, because once was simply not enough! What attracted us to his little cafe was the wonderful looking ice cream displayed in the window. With the ice cream already in mind for desert we ventured inside hoping that someone would speak English as we did not speak German and we were not disappointed. Rauf greeted us and asked us what we wanted, we said we were hungry he said no problem, take a seat. He chatted and told us he had chicken curry today, we said great, he said OK take a seat and leave it to me. He then came back with a freshly made salad and asked us what we wanted to drink, do you have mint tea? we asked, yes came the reply. He came back with 2 glass cups of fresh mint tea with a slice of orange..... simple but wonderfully refreshing. We sat and chatted, Rauf came back and introduced us to a lady sat next to us who spoke English and had lived in this part of Berlin for the past 35 years. As we chatted the chicken curry arrived, presented in a perfect size portion with rice, hand cut chicken breast pieces in a mild curry sauce with a decorative garnish - perfect. When I say perfect size portion I mean that you still had some room left for Ice Cream!! The curry was great, not too hot and not to mild, just right for both of us. Rauf came over from time to time to see how we were getting one and then said OK so time for dessert. Ice cream for me and Apple struddel for Iris. Which flavours would you like? After some deliberation I chose mango, raspberry and vanilla, 1 ball of each. After a short while Rauf appear
