I hadn't been to Kaz's in well over a decade, but decided on the spur of the moment to go with a colleague after a long day at a terrible conference. I called at the last minute for a reservation and was very surprised to get one. An even better surprise: A fabulous meal in a blessedly quiet corner of the handsome little place. All the fish was luminously fresh, but some things were standouts. Melt-in-your-mouth white toro called Hawaiian somethingorother. A beautiful "bird's nest" of paper-thin sliced squid around an uni heart with quail egg. And best of all, absolutely delicious smoked ankimo with a touch of jalapeno jelly (sounds strange, but it was perfect). I eat sushi every chance I get and this was the best I've had in a couple of years. So inventive, too. I actually felt like a human being again by the time I left the restaurant.
