This is quickly becoming one of my favorite restaurants in Bangkok and I predict great things ahead for the young chef (Start) and his business partner in the restaurant (Ken). They attended culinary school together and Start was on Thailand's national chef team. The menu, while seemingly straightforward Thai with some Western options, offers some harder to find dishes as well, like the delicious tamarind chicken. The green curry spring rolls and herb rice are both unique dishes and the curry pastes are made in-house, resulting in outstanding versions of Thai classics. I recently asked Start to prepare a special meal for a visiting chef from Toronto by saying I wanted him to have the best Thai food of his life. He and his team rose to the challenge, providing us with a a feast that included a few dishes we had never had or seen anywhere before, including an incredibly flavorful meat-based soup and a stunningly plated whole grouper. On another occasion, he made an outstanding spur-of-the-moment spicy beef salad, as I was in the mood for it and it was not on the menu. The simple cafe-style restaurant is quite pleasant, with both indoor and outdoor seating, and decorated with artwork by Start and Ken's friends. The music is eclectic; I heard bossa nova Marley during a recent dinner. Located alongside a serviced apartment building, Start Here a bit difficult to find, but entering through Silom 9 you'll find it right at the bend or by Sathorn 10 by taking a right at the end by the 7-11. It is strategically located amidst the new Mahanakhon development area, and once construction is through and the Ritz Carlton Residences, W Hotel and mall are in full operational mode, it will be buzzing with both locals and tourists and I'll be standing in line for a table. Prices are very reasonable, especially considering the quality; beer and wine are available.
