Recently (January 2013) a small group of us had lunch at Tanta-an restaurant at Grand Hirafu Nesiko ski resort. We each put in what we owed based on the individual cost of what we had but it fell substantially short of the total as per the bill. We double checked the till docket, asked for a calculator and demonstrated how the total was incorrect. The restaurant manager and staff were very evassive to the point that when challenged the manager would not even speak to us and avoided our request to review the bill. The bill was computer generated and calculated. We have no doubt that this is a scam aimed at tourists who often just divvy up the bill without question.
