I'm going to give this restaurant a 4 for their service alone – it was exemplary, even by the super-high standards of the One&Only Royal Mirage. The buffet itself was good, with an extensive range of Mezza and Salads but nothing special where the mains were concerned. You really need to be on top of your game if you want to make an impact on the Dubai buffet scene – Olives is nowhere close. But that’s not to say anything was bad – it just wasn’t brilliant (but I’ve heard a new team is working on improving that). I particularly liked the baked salmon, which first caught my eye because it was presented skin up, hmm. It was still nice and juicy and beautifully fragrant and flavorful with the herbs it had been cooked with, and not at all fishy. I specifically mention the juiciness as another reviewer found some of the dishes a little dried out from being under the warmer lights too long – not at all the case the day I visited. The restaurant itself is tastefully decorated to give a classic Mediterranean look and feel, which it most certainly does – the view of the beach and the sea enhancing the ambiance – quite lovely. Olives was not crowded when I visited, and from the few reviews I’ve read, it seems it’s not the most frequented around. That can be a very good thing if you want to have a meeting, as I did. So there you have it: good buffet, excellent service, quiet, well-appointed environment – the perfect place for a business lunch.
