I checked into the St Josef Hotel, exhausted, after an overnight flight from the US to Europe.. In spite of exhaustion, and the rainy weather, I was determined to get out and see something of Zurich, though I had given myself a quick tour of the city a year before, when I stayed at the same place. When I got back , soggy and even more tired, I decided not to walk the few blocks downhill to Niederdorfstrasse, which is, among other things, restaurant row in the city, and just eat at my hotel, something I'd not done on my last trip. It was pricey, but what's not in Switzerland. It is a very simple place, small, very neat and clean, and my waiter, the only one on duty that night, but a very experienced one, was extremely helpful and solicitous. There were only two others dining when I arrived, but three more tables filled fairly quickly, and as I was finishing a party of 10 or so filled it almost to capacity. I had the special, a delicious stroganoff in a rich sauce, with noodles in a plate on the side. It was filling and very tasty indeed, so much so that I almost took myself there again the next night (I had only two nights in Zurich), but opted for another place. I DID note that the special the next night was the same, but who cares, when the quality was so high? I'd highly recommend it, especially for those staying near the rail station - this is just across the river and uphill of it, so if you're ready for a relatively easy climb, go for it. I can't imagine you won't enjoy the food and service!
