Like most restaurants on Toronto Islands, this one opens seasonally, when the boaters return. Although it is in a private marina, it is open to the public. A private tender runs from the foot of York Street, tickets are the same price as the ferry, and the restaurant is only a five minute walk west of the Centre Island Ferry dock. The patio is large and fun, half uncovered for sun worshippers. The bar inside is cosy and nautical, with a long counter made from an island tree, felled in a winter storm. The bar service is brisk and the bartenders cheerful. A very modest menu starts out the beginning of the season, and expands as the summer advances. New items are promised any day, including hand-cut fries. A BBQ gets going on the patio for grilled fare by mid-June. There are no waiters, so one has to go to the bar to order, but it is all very informal and pleasant, and the food is quickly bussed from the kitchen in an adjacent building, an unlicensed snack bar, where one can also eat. The place is usually full of boaters and island characters. Sitting on the deck, the view of Toronto is spectacular, with the sailboats cruising by in the harbour. Weekends, there's often a live band. If you are looking for inexpensive and cheerful, this is Toronto’s best kept secret.
