At about 6.15 pm on Saturday 11 April, my adult son and I decided on a meal at the Thai Phuket Restaurant, 33785 Essendene Ave, Abbotsford because we were passing by and wanted an early dinner. We live in SE Asia and enjoy Thai food. It is a medium sized restaurant with a large bar on the right as you enter and Thai decorations are minimal but it was pleasant enough. Seating was fine (plain), tables were plain but a good size and the flooring seemed to be real wood planking but blackened. There was one other couple seated and a lady waiting at the bar for her take-out order. Prices seemed to be very much the same as other similar establishments nearby. There was one waitress and she promptly gave us our menus and a glass of water each, with a hint of lemon to it. This was the last good news. There was a great deal of laughter coming from the kitchen and it sounded like a party was in full swing. Listed on a blackboard by the bar was a som tum (green papaya salad) for $5.39 whilst the same dish was listed at $8.39 on the menu. I asked the waitress about this but she had no idea about the blackboard price and made no attempt to find out. We ordered a som tum and panang curry along with two portions of coconut rice from a menu that contained many of Thailand’s well known dishes. Over 30 minutes later, the waitress apologised for the delay in serving the food because of the many take-out orders and this was not the last time she apologised. Eventually a som tum arrived but the waitress looked at it, said she was not sure if it was the right one and removed it. It did not look like it had been mixed together Thai style and we did not see it again. The laughter continued from the kitchen and became downright irritating given that we were still waiting. At 7.00 pm, the waitress returned and queried our order of penang curry as she had not written down the order properly. I cancelled the orders, we left and walked across the road to an Indian restaurant and had a nice meal
