I found myself staying for three days in a hostal across the street from Casa Anton in the funky, fun neighborhood of Chueca. I decided to give this small, charming taberna a try and was so delighted by the warm welcome and delicious dinner that I returned at the end of my Madrid stay. The chilled beetroot and almond puree soup, drizzled with olive oil, is absolutely exquisite, and for the main I sampled a variety of salchichon, each more tasty than the previous. I was treated to an amuse buche of cold cucumber and yogurt puree, and a delicious rice pudding for dessert. The wines were excellent, especially the Ribera. But the nicest aspect of Anton is the service -- friendly, low key, unpretentious. There is an overall lovely vibe here, less frenetic than many Madrid tapas bars and restaurants. Well worth a visit ... or two!
