With such a cute name and a cross-eyed penguin as its logo, we couldn't resist eating in this new U District Western Chinese soup kitchen in Woori Korean market. A UW Chinese student wearing a red cap helped us pick out lotus root, rice noodles, tripe, wood ears and other ingredients from unlabeled bins which were weighed and cooked to make our Ma La Tang. While we waited we prowled the market, bought a half gal of sliced kimchi and admired the gold wrapping paper-wrapped florescent light fixtures in the eating area. We had a lot of fun with the waitress trying to transfer the long slippery rice noodles from the large bowl to our small bowls-they seemed alive and like they were slithering away; we failed, but we laughed so hard.... Ahem, total cost of one Tang US$11.50. The Internet was down, as usual, but luckily we had cash.
