It is easy to get a bowl of ramen or a plate of sushi in Japan. Finding a truly original Japanese restaurant with elegant, imaginative food at less than a king's ransom is very difficult, especially in Kyoto where the standards are Olympic-level high. This restaurant, like many treasures in Kyoto, is difficult to find but well worth the search. The Kanji (Chinese characters) in the name are unfamiliar even to Japanese, and there is only a small sign on the entrance. The interior is modern and spotless. The menu is only in Japanese as is the website, but this is not much of a problem, as one orders a "course" of food and lets the chef present the best of the kitchen on that day. As with kaiseki food, one receives a variety of small dishes, in this case packed in a large bento (lunch box). The selections are wonderful--a beautiful mix of highly original Japanese creations, all of which are unique to this restaurant. They are visually and sensually a delight. This is an ideal place for a lovely lunch. Highly recommended!
