Small place with no flashy advertising outside (in Kyoto, big signs are a bad sign ...). Super clean and tidy. Dad, mom, and son run it. Very friendly, although only the son seems to speak a bit of English. The sushi is excellent and is made one at a time then set down in front of you right on the counter. Fish is exactly at the right temperature and amazingly tasty. They had some interesting stuff, like Japanese Needle fish and dried sea bream skin. Excellent toro. And as it was season, they had a very nice matsutake soup as well. If you're unsure what you want or find communicating difficult, they offer three different "chef's pick" sushi assortments. I didn't try them but I'm sure they would also be a great choice. Beats the bigger places by lightyears.
