Yesterday our annual "big" family party of 26 persons was held at Grand Shanghai. It was a happy occasion not only because it's not very often that we all can get together, but also that we have located our missing chef. formerly we would meet at a restaurant we've frequented for at least three decades; however, we all agreed that lately the food was not the same. until one relative found out that "the chef"has left and opened his own restaurant, Grand Shanghai Chinese Restaurant, that is managed by his daughters. Here the food tastes as delicious as we all remembered. The Peking duck (the fatless, crispy duck skin) and the two dishes that were cooked with the meat were superb...better than at most five star Chinese restaurants. We especially like the garlic and pepper fried duck meat ( not oily at all but full of flavor). Yesterday we also ordered the ba-mee noodles with duck meat; other times we like to have the meat minced and eaten with salad. what should not be missed are the "crystal shrimps" (fried fresh shrimps), the steamed sea bass in chili and lime, pork leg/knuckle with steamed buns, chicken in chinese wine, minced shrimp on fried toast with sesame, and what have you. for dessert: crispy Chinese plum pancake. the service is excellent with attendants who are nice and friendly. the price is very reasonable. these days with the word out that the chef is here, it is recommended that for lunch reservations should be made.
